This picture is called “The Last Jew in Vinnitsa”. Vinnista was a Ukrainian city, which was part of the USSR. During World War 2 it was one of the many towns visited by the Nazi Death Squad known as the Einsatzgruppen der Sicherheitspolizei und des SD, or Einsatzgruppen, for short. They were the personal reapers of the Nazi military and the SS. Under the SD, or Sicherheitsdienst, which was the intelligence organization of Nazi Germany, they murdered over 1,000,000 people. Too understand the effectiveness of their gruesome acts, a horrid amount of towns ceased to exist after they went through. It took two days to kill 38,000 people in Babi Yar and 25,000 in Rumbula. This unit was so reviled that during the Nuremberg trials, they had their own separate trial. And were deemed a criminal organization.

In this picture, this man really was the last surviving Jewish person in Vinnista. Until he was executed seconds after this picture was taken.
